Tony Stark: A stylistic analysis

Writer: Zac Oxford-DasilvaZac Oxford-Dasilva

We all know that Infinity War comes out April 27th (props to RDJ for making that happen), and that my personal favorite Avenger will be leading the charge against Thanos. I have always admired Robert Downey Jr.'s performance as Tony, and in his good moments seen him as a role model and father figure. The character was also my first introduction to the concept of someone wearing a suit for fun, and not having to because of work (almost exactly 10 years ago)! Watching Tony evolve as a character over the course of the last ten years has been a wild ride, and his style may have come even further along that journey.

2008: The first outing.

Style points measured at 98%, Mr. Stark. Absolutely nailed it! Just don't button the bottom button and you'll get that last two percent. let this be a lesson, kids.

2010: Back at it again!

Pretty stereotypical young independently-wealthy CEO uniform. Loud tie, nearly-matching pocket square, variegated (?) stripe suit, and a striped shirt with an intense spread collar. My rating? For 2010: 7/10. For 2018?: 3/10 (You're better than this, Stark!)

2012: Teamwork makes the dream work.

Somebody's been reading my blog! That's the way that it's done. No further comment from me.

2013: We interrupt your normally scheduled programming to bring you a frightening lack of formalwear.

Is the Falke compression top cool? Yes. Did I love the shirt so much I got a close replica? Yes. Did I lose that shirt? Sadly, yes. Despite the fact that Tony's wardrobe basically consisted of this shirt, and various hoodies, tank tops, and a prehensile armor, Full points for that shirt.

2015: Teamwork, not surprisingly, still makes the dream work (and a lot of money).

Plum is the way to go if you're a genius-billionaire-playboy-philanthropist superhero. The subtle callout to the red in his armor is a cool little easter egg, and the almost red wine-y color looks very debonaire on Stark. Hopefully we get a suit like this again in at least 30 seconds of Infinity War?

2016: A lovely *insert product placement here*.

At long last, the lovely three-piece, two-button Tom Ford. The question is, is it actually Tom Ford? When I first watched the movie, I thought it was an O'Connor or Buckley base model made to Robert's specifications, but after a bit of research, I found that not to be the case. The suit is missing several details that are hallmarks of a Tom Ford suit; a curved barchetta breast pocket, a lengthened lapel hole, large lapels, and a ticket pocket. It also lacks the chest construction that TF suits do. The pants do not have the forward-biased onseam curved pockets. The costume designer for Civil War, Judianna Makovsky, in an interview, said that the clothing was made in Los Angeles (Tf suits are made in Italy). All of the Tom Ford stuff aside, it is a beautiful suit and is very well cut. Also, Tom Ford is amazing!

Side note: The shirt Tony wears when he shows the team Charles Spencer is Tom Ford. It is a blue poplin dress shirt with a spread collar and TF's signature spread collar (very similar to the TF shirt I own, but mine has a point collar instead).

2017: That one eccentric, rich uncle.

In the early days of the MCU, Tony was known for the same vibrant personal style that RDJ has. Over the next 9 years, he mellowed out in terms of his clothes. Homecoming was a reminder that Tony is definitely still himself and knows how to knock it out of the park with a suit. It's a three-button vertically-striped navy suit, which is complemented with a white poplin dress shirt with barrel cuffs purposely left undone, a purple and white floral pocket square, and a purple and blue paisley necktie tied in a four-in-hand knot. His sunglasses are the Concept 2 by Initium Eyewear. which were designed specifically for the movie. The glasses have rose lenses, and have gold frames, with brown (likely tortoiseshell) temple tips. The watch that he very, very briefly uses to open the door to reveal Peter's Iron Spider suit is probably his Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT, which is actually Robert's watch.

2018: The future is now.

Given that Infinity War is going to have an insane amount of action, Tony's probably going to be in armor for pretty much the entire movie. The above picture is from an IW cast and crew photoshoot, and is what I hope he wears at some point during the movie.

I'm super excited for the movie, and am really hoping that Tony doesn't die (I want Iron Man 4). See you in the next post!

With stylish regards,
